Vermont Floating Bridge (Brookfield)

Vermont Floating Bridge (Brookfield)

I drove to Montpelier, and on the way home, passed the coolest thing–a floating bridge! That’s a neat thing about Vermont (and Maine, for that matter): You can drive down all these little roads and find a surprise around every turn. The Floating Bridge is located in Brookfield, just south of Montpelier.

The bridge crosses Sunset Lake and floats because the lake, seemingly small, is too deep for pillars! 380 barrels keep the bridge afloat.

So it is a floating bridge: There’s no pillars or barriers or spans. It floats. On the water. By 380 barrels.

I’m not sure how well it floats, because we saw some puddles on it and it was closed off to cars.

In January, when Sunset Lake is frozen over, the crowds gather for a winter festival including one the best (and last) ice festivals ever.

Just cool pictures! Enjoy!
