River Street, located in Savannah Georgia, is one of the many things I love about Savannah. If you are unfamiliar with Savannah, it is easy to miss River Street. In fact, the first time I went to Savannah I missed it completely. The next time I was there, I happened upon it and was thrilled!
River Street is located behind the old warehouse buildings lining the river. Be sure to also stop in the shops located in the buildings. There are many unique stores and you are sure to find something for everyone. For the book connoisseur, there is the Books on Bay store. For the art lovers, there is Gallery 209 and River Street Gallery. If you love sweets as much as I do, you won’t want to miss the River Street Sweets store and Savannah’s Candy Kitchen. Savannah Accents and True Grits are two of my favorite stores on River Street. They have the most unique Southern Gifts I’ve ever seen. There are many more stores here to explore and enjoy.
There are also a variety of places to eat. Most of them specialize in seafood but there is a wide range of foods offered. I don’t like any kind of seafood and have never had a problem finding something to eat on River Street. My kids’ favorite place to eat (and my wallet loves it too) is a little stand that sells hotdogs.
There are many historic landmarks located on River Street. My favorite is The Waving Girl because of the story behind it. If you have children with you, you can buy the children’s book about her and it will make seeing the statue an exciting experience. When I took my children to see her the first time, they had no interest in seeing the statue. But the next time when I read the book to them first, they were asking to go see her.
River Street offers a wide range of Hotels. Unfortunately, because it is on the river, you need to be prepared to pay more at these hotels than you would anywhere else in Savannah. If you do have the extra money and want to stay here, River Street Inn is a great Hotel and not as expensive as some of the others on the River. For more information, visit www.riverstreetinn.com
Dolphin Magic is a great way to see Savannah’s water attractions. They will take you to two lighthouses and two forts and many other historic landmarks. For more information, visit www.dolphin-magic.com. If you have a little extra money to spend and a lot more time, Dolphin Plus is the way to go. Not only do you enjoy the historic landmarks of Savannah and the surrounding area, but you will also have private island time complete with your own golf cart. This is an amazing way to spend a day! With so many things to see and do on River Street, make sure you have plenty of time so you can enjoy it all. For more information and a complete listing of all of the shops and restaurants, visit http://www.riverstreetsavannah.com/index.php
