Anna Ruby Falls, located in Helen Georgia, is a beautiful site and well worth the visit. It is a nice outing for the entire family and aside from the small parking fee, is completely free. Bring a picnic and don’t forget the camera for an adventurous day.
Most anyone can make it to the semi-top of the mountain. I say semi-top because when you reach the top, there is a steep set of stairs that some might decide they aren’t able to climb. But even at the semi-top, the views are absolutely beautiful and make for wonderful pictures. Strollers and wheel chairs are permitted but you will obviously have to stop at the semi-top, as there are no ramps or alternatives to the steep stairs. There is also a trail for the vision impaired.
For the more adventurous people, there is a strenuous trail. It is off the beaten path and will take you a while to get up and back down. It is several miles, so if you chose to take this path, be prepared. Also be aware of the many snakes that call this area home.
The falls are located in the Tray Mountains. Once Cherokee Indian Territory, there are many trails throughout the mountain that were built to watch for enemy campfires. The names of the local rivers and mountains reflect their Cherokee heritage. The land around the falls was bought by Colonel John Nichols after the Civil War. He happened upon the falls during a horse ride and named them after his only daughter. Some time later, the area was bought and logged by Byrd-Matthews Lumber Company. In 1925, the area was bought by the United States government and restored to its former beauty.
The park is open from 9am until dusk. It is free to get into Anna Ruby Falls but the parking fee is $3. There is a nice little gift shop with many nature-inspired gifts and souvenirs at very reasonable prices. There are also picnic tables if you want to bring your lunch and enjoy a picnic with the family. There are snack and drink machines available as well.
