In addition to lush rain forest, monkeys, and unspoiled beauty, St. Kitts is also home to Brimstone Fort and black lava rocks.
Basically, the British occupied St. Kitts in 1782, until the French arrived with a fleet of fifty odd war ships, and the two had a nasty battle. The British held course, but the French were ultimately successful in their attack. The British fought so gallantly, the French let them depart in full dress as a code of honor.
So, some of these photos are of the Fort, wwaaaayy on top of the island. The road was a twisty and single lane, and we were all white knuckled hoping the brakes were working! The views were spectacular.
The other photos are of the shore line called “Black Rocks.” They are rocks made of lava.
This is a real fort, well preserved, and if the dangerous ride to the top doesn’t kill you, you will experience some of the most dramatic views anywhere.
